PICK Family Conference
Conference postponement
It is with our heartfelt apologies that we inform you of the PICK board’s decision to postpone the 2012 PICK family conference. Health and family issues facing several of the organizers’ and volunteers’ families was a major cause of this decision. Also, we do not have the funding needed to sponsor the conference in a way that we felt would be worth the expenses families would incur to be able to be there. It is undetermined at this time when we’ll be having a conference.
Purpose
The focus of this conference will be to provide educational resources for families impacted by kernicterus. Possible conference topics will include:
- Current treatments and therapies such as Baclofen pumps, medications, alternative therapies, cochlear implants
- Emerging treatments and therapies such as Deep Brain Stimulation
- Moving through puberty and adulthood with kernicterus
- Self-determination, social services and public policy
- Living with kernicterus: travel, adaptive recreation, etc…
- Ideas for caring for caregivers and siblings
Families from throughout the world will be invited to meet leading researchers in the fields of neurology, movement disorders, auditory neuropathy and other medical disciplines. Some of the invited speakers include Dr. Steven M. Shapiro, Dr. Vinod K. Bhutani and Dr. Charles I. Berlin.
Audience
- Parents, grandparents, guardians or other adult family members of children with kernicterus
